Shelly taught middle school language arts for Decatur Public Schools from 1994 - 2021, receiving a Master of Arts in English from University of Illinois Springfield in 2011. A grateful and proud mother and grandmother, she is an avid reader and writer herself who enjoys encouraging others’ writing endeavors.
Analysis
fiction was fraught–
for me it was nonfiction
something intriguing
about the “non”
the challenge of going nil
in a game of spades
or not going to the party
for stolen solitude instead
like saving last night’s piece of dessert
to eat with my morning coffee
or the facts my mother cataloged
in her notebooks, kept
without embellishment
life need only be witnessed
written down and explained
with analysis
